They just
diagnosed them.
What now? Breathe. Here are the steps, your rights and the mistakes to avoid.
Breathe
A diagnosis does not change who your child is. They are the same person as yesterday. Now you just have a name for what was happening and a map to help.
Keep the report safe
Make 3 copies of the diagnostic report. One for the school one for your records and one for future appointments.
Notify the school in writing
Telling the tutor in person is not enough. It must be documented in writing with a date stamp. This starts the clock on their obligation to act.
Request a meeting with the school counselor
The counselor coordinates adaptations. Request a meeting to review the report together and plan what support your child needs.
Find a family association
You are not alone. In every region there are family associations that know the system the rights and the resources. They can guide you.
Apply for benefits if applicable
Depending on the diagnosis and your region, you may be entitled to disability benefits, therapeutic support, or tax deductions. Ask your family association.
This guide is for guidance only and is based on current Spanish education law (LOE-LOMLOE, Organic Law 3/2020). Specific regulations vary by region. Check the ones for your territory.
